Preparing for the Journey: Basic Information

Film Focus: In this video, Dr. Taylor Marshall answers the often-asked question, “Why does the Catholic canon have more books than the Protestant canon?” He discusses the history of the canons of Scriptures starting with Josephus and continuing through the multiple Church councils which solidified the Catholic canon. In addition, he gives a multitude of examples of where the Deuterocanonical books were recognized as canonical by the early Church Fathers.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How many more books does the Catholic Bible have than that Protestant Bible? List them.
  2. How is the Hebrew Bible divided? How many books modern Jews recognize? Why do they recognize only these books?
  3. At the time of Christ, who had the correct canon? Explain your answer.
  4. List three to four sources in the early Church recognized the Deuterocanonical books as part of the canon.
  5. Name the Church councils which discussed the canon of Scripture and the year which they were held.
