Cluny Reform Movement Story

Film Focus: During the High Middle Ages there were many abuses of secular power which affected the Church. This video recounts how the reforms at the monastery at Cluny spread to Pope Gregory VII who ultimately dealt with these issues of abuse of power on a grander scale.

1. What issues caused the need for the reforms which started at Cluny?
2. Who were some of the major players in the Cluniac reforms?
3. One major issue addressed by the Cluniac reforms was lay investiture. What is lay investiture? How was this issue solved?
4. Do you think that this is still a problem in the Church today? Why or why not?
