Film Focus: In this episode from the British Library, Buddhism is discussed. Its various sacred texts, which are revered in different places to differing degrees based upon the type of Buddhism embraced, are explained. Many, if not all, of the Buddhist texts shown are full of colorful art that depicts the scenes of the sacred texts.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Who was the Buddha? Explain a bit about his story and what he taught.
  2. What are the primary sacred texts of Buddhism? What are their original languages?
  3. What is unique about these texts? Consider their message, their art, their binding, and more.
  4. What do you notice is distinct about the art in Buddhism’s sacred texts? What is similar to other sacred texts?
  5. What are the primary tasks of Buddhists monks? Do male and female Buddhist monks have different roles? What is the main job of the lay people?
