Film Focus: The British Library uses its extensive holdings of religious texts to discuss religion and showcase beautiful examples of ancient sacred texts.  In this episode, the Jewish Scriptures help to bring light to what it means to be a Jewish person today through explaining some of the most sacred aspects and practices of Judaism.

Text Focus: Pages 50–53, 55–56

Discussion Questions:

  1. The video begins by discussing how a variety of different people may consider themselves Jewish for different reasons. Discuss some of the reasons that were given. Have you noticed this trend in Christianity or is it particular to Judaism?
  2. What are the primary sacred texts of Judaism? When were they written/put together as a “canon”? What is the original language? Who is considered the author? What type of literature is included?
  3. Why were these texts singled out as most important?
  4. What is unique about these texts? Consider their message, their art, their binding, and more.
  5. What do you notice is distinct about art in Judaism’s sacred texts? What is similar to other sacred texts?
