Unit 6: Catholicism and the Just War

Catholicism and the Just War [Defense] Tradition (1 of 6)

Film Focus Point: While this first part of a six part series on the just war theory does not get into the specific principles, it does an admirable job of establishing the specific parameters (militarism and pacifism) around which the idea of the just war theory is formulated. Indeed, it may well provide an impetus to examine the other five parts of this program.

Text Focus Point: Pages 249-251

Discussion Questions

  1. What is the difference in changing the question from “under what circumstances is it morally right and just for me to use violence or deadly force to resolve a conflict” to “under what circumstances is it morally right and just for another individual or nation to use violence or deadly force against me?”

  2. Why is it not your role to judge the innocence or sinfulness of others?

  3. How are militarism and pacifism alike? How are they different?
